DELIVERING THE SOLUTIONS YOU NEED
We were commissioned by a main contractor to address all the noise and acoustic issues associated with the development of a new Holiday Inn in the West Midlands.
The project combined the assessment of external noise for planning and noise break-in purposes; the control of internal noise within the building to ensure compliance with client’s acoustics requirements and also input into the BREEAM assessment being performed on the building.
The team delivering the acoustic consultancy to the main contractor was headed by one of our principal consultants, Jonathan Rigg, who also leads the acoustics team within ENS.
The client required a quick response from ENS at the tendering stage to ensure that all costs associated with the client’s acoustic requirements were determined prior to the final tender offer being made along with continued acoustic design guidance once the project was successfully won.
The project involved the design of room acoustics for the various bedrooms and function rooms within the development along with the control of reverberation times in corridors and the reception and meeting spaces.
The key requirement for acoustics within the hotel was to ensure that all future occupants were able to get a ‘good nights sleep’ and, with a busy dual carriageway just outside the hotel, it was imperative that the building envelope not only protected against the continuous road traffic ‘hum’ but also single, noisy events such a car doors slamming in the car park, all of which can cause sleep disturbance.
The project was completed to time and to budget and all internal noise levels required by the client were validated and satisfied.
Since this project was won, we have been commissioned to design the acoustics for a further two hotel in the Midlands and East Midlands each with different noise environments (airport and motorway).
Recent developments in the hotel market, where properties are leased by hotel operators, have shown that it is of key importance to have a good standard of acoustics to ensure that long term tenants can achieve high occupancy rates and thus profit from their investment.
